The American Atheists have recently bought a billboard above a New Jersey highway which looks to be celebrating Christmas, but reads, "You KNOW it's a Myth — This Season Celebrate REASON!" The American Atheists say they are trying to reach out to closeted non-believers during this holiday season.
According to their website, the billboard serves three purposes:
- 1) To address those atheists who "go along to get along", and to encourage them to come out of their closets
- 2) To attack the myth that Christianity owns the solstice season.
- 3) To raise the awareness of the organization and the movement.
Hmm, this certainly is interesting. I hadn't heard of it. While I think it is important to recognize the "reason for the season" and to think about the depth of meaning Christmas signifies,I do not agree with their stance.
ReplyDeleteWow, thanks for posting this. It's really interesting. After looking into it more and reading about why they did it, it does seem to be less about calling out Christians and more for the American Atheists promotion of themselves. It definitely doesn't come across like that on first glance of the billboard though.
ReplyDeleteI think this billboard assumes a lot and is very offensive. It assumes that people apart of other religions are unreasonable. I feel like it's very attacking to Christians. I also feel that if atheists want to be treated like they are apart of their own respected religion, they need to stay away from this marketing tactic.
